One of the defining movies of the 80's decade, The Breakfast Club remains an entertaining film which evokes nostalgia among many viewers. Inevitably, any foray into the cinema blockbusters of the 1980s will evoke a number of titles, such as Back To The Future, Beverly Hills Cop, or The Goonies. The Breakfast Club is certainly one of those films, and it's almost universally cited as one of the preeminent films from the era.

Featuring a motley band of eccentric baseball teammates, Major League ranks as one of the best sports comedies ever produced. Released in 1989, it follows the story of the then hapless Cleveland Indians (winners of numerous division titles in the decade since) who are inherited by their dead owner’s self-absorbed, bitchy wife, Rachel Phelps. Uncovering a clause in the team’s contract that will allow her to move the team to Miami if attendance falls below two million for the year, Phelps does everything in her power to make the Indians not just lovable losers, but the worst team in baseball history.

One of the surprise films of 1995, While You Were Sleeping is one of the top romantic comedies of the decade. Sandra Bullock experiences her breakout role as the loveable lead character, and Bill Pullman makes a name for himself a year before the release of Independence Day (where he performed masterfully as the president). Overall, While You Were Sleeping is a classic feel-good love story with enough comedy and laughs to avoid earning the designation of a soppy chick flick.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Music, Original Score (John Corigliano), The Red Violin should've at the very least received a Best Picture nomination. Overlooked by the arbiters of most of the major awards ceremonies, The Red Violin nonetheless enjoyed widespread critical acclaim. And every bit of its praise is well-deserved.

If Seinfeld is a show about nothing, then Office Space is the hit comedy about one man’s “dream of doing nothing”… Arguably the best work-related comedy ever written, Office Space follows the life of Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston), a computer programmer in his late-twenties who hates his mind-numbing job updating bank software for Initech Corporation. Hilarious from beginning to end, Office Space is the ideal comedy for anyone who’s spent one iota of life wasting away in a cubicle.Office Space focuses on the mundane world of Peter Gibbons and his fellow computer programmers Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu) and Michael Bolton (David Herman).

Personally, Bruce Almighty is my favorite Jim Carrey movie ever. It’s never outlandish in its approach, and at times, it’s quite serious and adult. In fact, for a comedy, it presents some surprisingly deep philosophical questions concerning the actions of a just God and our place in the universe.

For all the widespread critical acclaim that surrounded the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan (which portrayed the D-Day invasion Normandy landing), little is said about the opening scenes of Enemy At The Gates. Just as lifelike and certainly as, if not more, compelling, Enemy At The Gates paints a vivid picture of the Battle of Stalingrad. As Nazi forces besiege the city, Russian peasants are shipped across the river in undefended boats.

Winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Chicago is a brilliant big screen adaptation of choreographer-director Bob Fosse's 1975 Broadway musical of the same name. The story’s ingenious jabs at tabloid fame and the fleeting tastes of the popular mindset, omnipresent in both the 1920’s (the movie’s setting) and the 1970’s (the date of its writing) is just as relevant today in an age where criminal celebrities such as O.J.

Hands down, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is the best Christmas-themed comedy ever filmed. Personally, I make it habit to watch this movie about ten million times between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Even after seeing the film so many times that I can recite it word-for-word, Christmas Vacation remains as hilarious and entertaining as the previous holiday season.

Michael Perlowin breaks new ground with innovative and enjoyable music performed primarily and surprisingly on the pedal steel guitar. As with his forays into the world of Debussy, Stravinsky and Broadway with his Firebird Suite and West Side Story albums, Michael Perlowin is again shattering the stereotype of the pedal steel guitar as a country-and-western-only instrument. In his new album, Spanish Steel, he presents 20 tracks from or about Spain, featuring works by Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Rodrigo, Julio Martinez Oyanguren, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The more I study the life of Elvis Presley for my website research, the more I learn about what an amazing and generous man he was. This article is just one example of his charitable Christmas spirit. It was Christmas time, and in the local paper there was a short article about an old woman in North Memphis, it was near the area where Elvis lived while he was growing up. [Read more]
